چکیده

Considerable effort in recent decades has focused on near-storm environment interrogation via model-based planar fields (e.g., Stensrud et al. 1997) and model-based proximity soundings in order to discriminate between nontornadic and significant (> F2) tornado environments for supercells (e.g., Thompson et al. 2003, hereafter T03; Thompson et al. 2007). This emphasis in severe environment discrimination led to the development of supercell ingredients-based composite parameters (i.e., significant tornado parameter, T03). Convective mode is an additional component widely recognized as a contributor to the occurrence and non-occurrence of severe weather. Recent work by Smith et al. (2012; hereafter S12) demonstrated the relationship of convective mode to tornado damage intensity, and Thompson et al. (2012; hereafter T12) took a step further and preliminarily investigated the relationship between convective mode, the near-storm environment, and tornado damage intensity.

Developmental Work at the Storm Prediction Center in Pursuit of Tornadic Supercell Probability and Tornado Intensity Estimation Using a Severe Supercell Dataset

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is developing both a tornadic and severe nontornadic sample of supercell storms from 2014. This latest work is an extension of earlier research which led to the development of conditional probabilities of tornado damage rating from near-storm environment and radar-based storm-scale characteristics from a 5-year sample of tornadoes (4,770) reported in the contig...

The Statistical Severe Convective Risk Assessment Model

This study introduces a system that objectively assesses severe thunderstormnowcast probabilities based on hourly mesoscale data across the contiguous United States during the period from 2006 to 2014. Previous studies have evaluated the diagnostic utility of parameters in characterizing severe thunderstorm environments. In contrast, the present study merges cloud-to-ground lightning flash data...

Diagnosing the Conditional Probability of Tornado Damage Rating Using Environmental and Radar Attributes

Radar-identified convective modes, peak low-level rotational velocities, and near-storm environmental data were assigned to a sampleof tornadoes reported in the contiguousUnitedStates during 2009–13.The tornado segment data were filtered by the maximum enhanced Fujita (EF)-scale tornado event per hour using a 40-km horizontal grid. Convectivemodewas assigned to each tornado event by examining f...

FORECASTERS’ FORUM The Challenge of Forecasting Significant Tornadoes from June to October Using Convective Parameters

This study is an application of the Statistical Severe ConvectiveRiskAssessmentModel (SSCRAM), which objectively assesses conditional severe thunderstorm probabilities based on archived hourly mesoscale data across the United States collected from 2006 to 2014. In the present study, SSCRAM is used to assess the utility of severe thunderstorm parameters commonly employed by forecasters in antici...

Conditional Tornado Probabilities from Ruc-2 Forecasts

Accurately predicting the timing and location of tornadoes with lead times of more than a few tens of minutes will continue to be difficult, despite recent advances in numerical weather prediction. Tornadoes and the associated thunderstorms are smallscale phenomena, and the theory of chaos strongly suggests that such events will have a very short period of predictability (Lorenz 1969; Islam et ...
